Our theory classes dissect both classical and popular music as a means to analysing how it is exactly that a piece of music works. This is done in tandem with covering all of the material required to be known in order to sit the Royal Irish Academy exams, or the Junior and Leaving Certificate theory exams.
Many students are dissuaded from learning theory because they think of it as a dry and stuffy subject that is somehow separate from real music. The truth however is that learning music theory is a great way to make sense of what you already know. Theory should be thought of as a way of simplifying the understanding of music to its essentials, and therefore making it easier to learn, play and understand. This course aims to relate the technical material covered to music that the student is familiar with, whether popular or classical.
Each week a different aspect of music theory is discussed and the student is given a few exercises to work through at home in order to test their understudying.
